Joe Crede

26 June 2008

There is no doubt that Joe Crede is one of the top 3 thirdbasemen in the AL. He has the best range of any thirdbaseman in all of baseball and possesses one of the best swings in all of baseball. Among AL thirdbasemen, he is currently third in BA, tied for first in RBIs, and is first in HRs. Of course due to those damn Yanks and Red Sox Nation, Crede probably will not get the fan's vote, and with Terry Francona managing the AL All-Stars he will not be on the bench because Francona will choose Mike Lowell over him. Now, he may get 3 thirdbasemen in the game, but with the rule of having 1 All-Star representative for each team, it could get complicated. That is why White Sox fans NEED to spend all night voting for

Fact. I have yet to go to a White Sox game this year where Joe Crede did not hit a grand slam. What could be better than that? Let me tell you:
As I stood at the gate waiting to get in, with my modest upper deck ticket in hand, there was a fella giving away tickets that weren’t going to be used, just 5 rows behind the Sox dugout. Naturally, I took them. A cold windy Sunday game in April turned into a sun-filled shouting distance display of Sox offense. I’d like to thank Brian Gant from Riddell Sports for being kind enough to not let those tickets go to waste. Very clutch.

Clutch Joe Crede sent the crowd over the top. The temperature got colder as the game went on but I don't think anyone noticed. Though I was still unwilling to shed my jacket to proudly strut in my #24. 5 straight, let's see how long this can hold up. I know I'll be in the house for plenty of them.  Thanks again Jessica for hooking up those excellent seats.

I could start right out complaining about how the umps screwed us. About how they squeezed us out of the game with the bad calls. About how Garko’s foot was clearly off of the bag as Thome crossed. A call that prevented a run. About how Crede clearly slid under the tag as he slid into home plate. A call that cost us a run. About how Orlando Cabrera was called for offensive interference, on an identical slide that was allowed on the Cleveland side, only a short time earlier. A play that cost us a run.

Joe Crede is now our official 3rd baseman. Which of course puts Josh Fields back in Charlotte. With trades dead it was really a long shot for the season to begin any other way but you still can’t help feeling bad for Fields. Crede may struggle for a short while at the plate but I really believe it will pay off. He’s got a lot to prove post-surgery and it’s a contract year. He’ll be rakin’ in no time.

I fully expect my man Joe Crede to be officially awarded the starting third baseman’s job. He’s still struggling to catch back up at the plate but it shouldn’t be long before he’s back to getting those clutch hits. Center field is the real issue. Brian Anderson has been absolutely raking all spring long, and we already know he is solid defensively. But we need a lead-off guy. Jerry Owens has had a quality spring, can cover plenty of ground in center, and is sure to burn up the basepaths a bit. I have no idea what the decision will be on this, though I think I lean in the direction of Owens, just hate to see Anderson not get another shot. No leadoff hitter. No wins.

And thank god. I rue the day ahead of time that we let Joe Crede slip away.

On that North side team, reports say that Felix Pie is going to miss a few days for surgery to “correct a personal problem.” What in the hell does that mean?

3rd base? Josh Fields. Enough said. I love Joe Crede but he has played his last regular season game with Sox. I see him looking healthy and being dealt before the season opener. Maybe to the revamped NL West? With 2 rotation spots open, you can almost guarantee John Danks getting one of them with Gavin Floyd, Lance Broadway and others competing. I think it will be Floyd, but if he continues his struggles at the ML level, then I hope to see Broadway called up sooner than later. I'm not sure if it was his stellar performance against the Royals last September, or if I have a tiny man-crush on him, but I think he is the future of the Sox starters. And as for Mr. Incredible, "Stay positive," you and Chuck (his dad) will make your long-awaited trip to the Hall of Fame sometime soon. Congrats Jim, you deserve it.
