Juan Uribe

9 April 2008

More amusingly, Bobby Jenks claims that Juan Uribe and Pablo Ozuna are the next to go blonde faced. No word on if it will cause Uribe to cut down on his swing.

Juan Uribe is off of waivers and officially a member of the 2008 White Sox. Further, he’s our most of the time second baseman after putting on a nice little hitting display during his little waiver stint. What does it all mean? I’d like to think that it means he’ll be hitting like he can throughout the season and we’ve got ourselves a solid 2B and bottom lineup hitter. More realistically I’m just hoping he can keep his hot streak going through at least the first couple weeks of the season. If we can make a good showing through April I think we stand a good chance to stay near the top of the central.

Juan Uribe has been released…on waivers. It doesn’t necessarily mean he’s gone but I’d say it’s the Sox saying they are ready to give Alexei Ramirez the job. Apparently the waivering of Uribe could just be to “test his market value”. He just signed that $4.5 million dollar contract so if that can be lost I think they’ll go for it. I doubt that .250 hitting shortstops with 5 million dollar contracts are in that high of demand. I’m not 100% clear on how it all works, but if they don’t pull him back and nobody claims him, he’s just a free agent after that, but Kenny will have to pay his contract anyways. I wouldn’t go so far as to call that worst case scenario but paying something for nothing certainly isn’t the best thing that could happen. The Orioles are apparently without a serviceable shortstop and looking but I don’t know what they would want to give. They want pitching for Brian Roberts. That’s one thing we definitely don’t have extra of.

Alexei Ramirez as good as advertised. Kind of. Offensively he looks great so far. Against early spring training pitching it doesn’t mean too much I suppose. Defensively, not so good.  Though I guess I could give the same “it’s early” disclaimer. Ozzie went ahead and said that he was a bit rough defensively and I have seen him look terribly uncomfortable out there with my own eyes. I’m thinking we probably end up seeing Uribe at 2B after all.  But more than likely he'll at least make the team.  I really want him to have a shot.

Juan Uribe is a liar. He claims he’ll do whatever the Sox want as far as his position goes. I’m gonna go head and call him a liar. Did I already say that? He has apparently dropped a few pounds which is good; he was beginning to look a little like a Molina. That’s not going to stop him from swinging at everything thrown in the general direction of the plate. I think his attitude adjustment will only last as long as it takes Ozzie to award a starting spot to someone else (Ramirez).

is a 3-way race between the aforementioned Ramirez, Danny Richar, and the almost perfect posterior Juan Uribe. I hope and pray everyday that Kenny Williams makes a move and ends Uribe's tenure with the Sox. He has made his contributions, especially in 2005, but really Juan, "Thanks, but no thanks." Danny Richar has too much potential to be sent down to AAA, and Ramirez's versatility in the field has him winning a bench job over Uribe. 3rd base? Josh Fields. Enough said. I love Joe Crede but he has played his last regular season game with Sox. I see him looking healthy and being dealt before the season opener. Maybe to the revamped NL West? With 2 rotation spots open, you can almost guarantee John Danks getting one of them with Gavin Floyd, Lance Broadway and others competing. I think it will be Floyd, but if he continues his struggles at the ML level, then I hope to see Broadway called up sooner than later. I'm not sure if it was his stellar performance against the Royals last September, or if I have a tiny man-crush on him, but I think he is the future of the Sox starters. And as for Mr. Incredible, "Stay positive," you and Chuck (his dad) will make your long-awaited trip to the Hall of Fame sometime soon. Congrats Jim, you deserve it.
